Mohammad Saleem, studying in class 9 of PG Halli Government High School said, “I want to become an Assistant Commissioner of Police when I grow up”. He broadcast his ‘Day and Night’ concept using table lamps at the Mega Science Fair happened at Palace Grounds, Bangalore on Tuesday.
Nazia Anjum, studying in class 9 at BBMP Girls’ High School wants to be a doctor and Samareen Khanam, studying in same class wants to be a science teacher. They are all busy in explaining their science models at this fair.
Children learn more things and they are trying to deliver their knowledge in the fair because it is out of the textbook knowledge. Agastya International Foundation and IBM conducted the two-day fair for the children to bring up their knowledge out.
Around 10,000 children brought together from various districts of the Karnataka state. This platform will help them to improve the knowledge, discover and come to know about new things in science.
Ramji Raghavan, Chairman, Agastya International Foundation said, “We’re encouraging the shift from ‘yes’ to ‘why’, ‘looking’ to ‘observing’, ‘textbook bound’ to being ‘hand-on’ “. The students were encouraged to discover new in science, how to think differently and creatively and how to solve problems in efficient manner.
Students are also encouraged by displaying models made from the waste items. Rajesh S, a Class 8 student of BBMP Boy’s High School, Shivajinagar said, “This is a blow horn model made with straw. The vibrations vary with each cut we make”.
Shanta Karadekar, science and maths teacher at Uttara Kannada’s MLA’s Model Government School said, “We need a lab in our school on a priority basis. Given the number of students in the higher classes, we need to teach them through hands-on models but unfortunately our infrastructure doesn’t support this practical approach”.
